This year Madison’s Asian American Media Spotlight is sponsoring two in-person film screenings which will be free and open to the public: Smoking Tigers (2023) and Chaperone (2024).

Smoking Tigers  (2023) – Oct 4, 7pm (91 min)

16-year-old Hayoung (Ji-young Yoo, star of Amazon Prime Video’s Expats) seeks distraction from her complicated family life by trying to fit in with her more affluent cram school peers. With the delicate exploration of generational conflict, class, and the model minority myth in LA’s Korean American community, it is clear why writer-director So Young Shelly Yo earned the Tribeca Festival’s Untold Stories award to finance this feature debut.

Chaperone (2024)– Oct 5, 7pm (102 min)

Set in picturesque Hilo, Hawaii, following complacent loner Misha who is approacher her 30th birthday with few prospects in life. When a local high school senior unknowingly invites the older woman to a beach hang out, Misha choose not to disclose the large age gap. Eisenberg’s solo directoral debut capture the nuances of a flawed protagonist with dynamic styles and a fearless performance.
